A woman who was killed in a car accident in Ventura has been identified by officials as 50-year-old Laurie Perr. The Ventura County Star reports that Perr was fatally injured in a pedestrian accident the evening of December 4, 2009, at the intersection of Worth Way and Upland Road in Camarillo. She was on her evening walk with a friend, when an UPS truck hit her. Perr was taken to an area hospital where she died of her injuries. Anyone who saw this fatal accident is asked to call Ventura County Sheriff's officials at 805-388-5132.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Laurie Perr, especially her husband and teen son. This grieving family will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.

Ventura Pedestrian Accident Statistics

There were nine injuries involving pedestrian accidents in Camarillo, according to California Highway Patrol's 2007 traffic accident statistics. Countywide, eight people died and 186 were injured as a result of pedestrian accidents. Also, in Ventura County, car accidents claimed 71 lives and injured 3,993 people in 2007.

It's not clear from this news report why the driver of the UPS truck did not see Perr on the street. A number of questions need to be answered here. Was the truck driver intoxicated? Was he distracted? Was he driving recklessly, speeding or being negligent in any other way. Was there a dangerous condition at the intersection, which may have caused this horrific accident? Some commenters to the news report state that Worth Way does not have a sidewalk where this accident occurred. Could that have played a part in this tragedy?

Liability Issues in Car Accidents

If the UPS driver was at fault for causing this fatal accident, then he as well as his employer can be held liable for Perr's wrongful death accident. Such claims are usually filed by families of deceased car accident victims against negligent parties, seeking compensation and damages. If a dangerous or defective roadway caused the accident, the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining this roadway can also be held liable.

However, such claims against California governmental agencies must be properly filed within 180 days of the accident or injuries. An experienced California personal injury lawyer will be able to advise injured victims and their families about their legal rights and options in such cases.
