Four people sustained serious injuries in a Riverside car accident involving a head-on collision near Mecca, the afternoon of June 10, 2010. According to KPSP News, the car crash occurred near the intersection of Grapefruit Boulevard and 64th Avenue in Mecca. A 28-year-old woman, who was driving a 1991 Honda sedan north on Grapefruit Boulevard, crossed into opposing lanes of traffic and crashed into a 2005 Kia minivan. The van's driver, a 61-year-old man, and his two passengers sustained major injuries. The driver of the Honda and the three injured victims were transported to a local hospital. An investigation is ongoing.
I sympathize with the injured victims in this crash. I wish them the very best for a quick and complete recovery from their injuries. They will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.
Car Accidents
There were 121 deaths and 2,615 injuries involving car accidents in the unincorporated areas of Riverside County, according to CHP's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). In Riverside County as a whole, 220 people died and 8,561 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.
What Caused the Head-On Crash?
If the details of this news report are accurate, it appears that the driver of the Honda may have been at fault here. However, I trust officials are looking into what caused the driver of the Honda to swerve into opposing lanes of traffic and trigger the head-on collision. There are still several unanswered questions here. Was the driver of the Honda under the influence? Was she distracted? Was she speeding or driving recklessly? Was she negligent in any other way at the time of the collision? Head-on crashes can be extremely violent and intense, and often result in catastrophic injuries or death. I trust officials are examining these questions and are trying to determine exactly what occurred here and why.
Fault and Liability
If the Honda's driver is determined to have been at fault, she could be held liable for the major injuries caused here. Injured victims in such cases could seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, surgeries, rehabilitation, emotional distress, pain and suffering, and other related damages.
Victims would be well-advised to seek the counsel of an experienced Riverside personal injury lawyer, who will carefully analyze all aspects of the incident and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also advise injured victims about how their car insurance policy applies to an incident involving an uninsured or underinsured driver.
