Fatal Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Car Accident
A man was fatally injured in a Los Angeles car accident involving a hit-and-run driver on the 10 Freeway the night of February 18, 2010, CBS News reports. California Highway Patrol officials say the multi-vehicle, hit-and-run accident occurred on the westbound 10 Freeway in West Covina, close to Azusa Avenue. Officials are searching for two suspects who were last seen on Garvey and entering a residential area. The victim, identified as a resident of West Covina, was pronounced dead at the scene.
My heart goes out to the family and friends of this deceased victim for their tragic and devastating loss. I offer my deepest sympathies to everyone who knew and loved this man. This grieving family will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.
Car Accidents
According to CHP's 2008 traffic accident statistics, there were five fatalities and 500 injuries involving car accidents in West Covina. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 667 fatalities and 52,229 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents during the same year.
Leaving the Scene of an Accident
Hit-and-run or leaving the scene of an accident is a serious crime under California law. California Vehicle Code section 20001 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident."
I truly hope that the hit-and-run suspects in this case are apprehended and brought to justice. Based on this news report, it is not still clear how many vehicles were involved and how exactly this fatal car accident took place. However, under California law, motorists involved in accidents must stop at the scene of the crash, irrespective of whose fault the accident was. Drivers must exchange information such as identification, license and insurance. Motorists are also required to get help for injured victims, if they are in a position to do so safely. "Help" could be just calling 911, so the victim can get prompt medical attention.
An Experienced Injury Lawyer Can Help
In such cases, injured victims or their families would be well-advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury attorney who will financially pursue the negligent motorist found responsible for the collision and make sure the victims receive fair compensation for their injuries, damages and losses. A skilled California car accident lawyer will also be able to tell victims how their car insurance policy applies in the event of a hit-and-run accident or an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver.
