A man in his 40s was fatally injured in a San Francisco car accident, which officials say, involved a hit-and-run driver. According to a CBS San Francisco news report, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred the morning of June 18, 2011 in the 2200 block of Mission Street. The man died from his injuries. Witnesses say the vehicle, which fled the scene, was a white minivan, possibly a Chevrolet. The suspect has been described as an African-American man between 30 and 40 years old. San Francisco Car Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 16 fatalities and 790 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in San Francisco. Also, citywide, during the same year, 35 people died and 3,577 were injured as a result of car accidents.

Leaving the Scene of a Crash

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the Chevy van not only struck and fatally injured this pedestrian, but also fled the scene leaving the victim lying on the roadway without care or medical attention. This was an appalling act of cruelty and absolutely unconscionable. Leaving the scene of a fatal car accident is also a felony under California law. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident."

Families of deceased car accident victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced San Francisco personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to determine whether a dangerous roadway caused or contributed to the incident. If that was the case, the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining that roadway could be held liable. Under California Government Code Section 911.2, any personal injury claim against a governmental agency must be filed within 180 days of the incident.
