Actor Martin Ferrero, best known for his performances in "Jurassic Park" and "Get Shorty" was involved in a Los Angeles car accident that left two pedestrians injured. According to a news report in The Press Telegram, the accident occurred on Cahuenga Boulevard. The pedestrians were hit by a Volvo station wagon, driven by Ferrero, as they attempted to cross Cahuenga. The male pedestrians allegedly walked into the westbound lane of traffic. One of the pedestrians is in stable condition after suffering head lacerations and a leg injury. The other pedestrian did not require hospitalization for his minor injuries.

My thoughts and prayers go out to these injured victims and their families. I wish them both the very best for a swift and complete recovery. It is indeed fortunate that there were no major injuries here.

Los Angeles Pedestrian Accidents

According to the California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) there were 104 fatalities and 2,716 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in 2008. During the same year, 214 people died and 4,985 were injured as a result of pedestrian accidents in Los Angeles County.

Causes and Liability Issues

Based on this news report, it appears that the pedestrians were not in a crosswalk and were walking in traffic lanes. California law requires motorists to yield right-of-way to pedestrians in crosswalks and at intersections. However, pedestrians have duties and responsibilities as well. California Vehicle Code section 21950 (b) states: "No pedestrian may suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle that is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard. No pedestrian may unnecessarily stop or delay traffic while in a marked or unmarked crosswalk."

If an investigation determines that Ferrero caused the accident then the pedestrians may seek compensation for their injuries and damages. In such cases, injured victims may benefit from a consultation with an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer. A skilled car accident attorney will also be able to determine whether a dangerous or defective roadway condition caused the collision. If that was the case, the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway could also be held liable. Please remember that any personal injury claim against a governmental entity must be properly filed within 180 days of the incident.
