Eladio Lemus, 68, was killed in a hit-and-run car accident in Madera after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing an intersection. According to a news report in The Fresno Bee, Lemus was crossing the street at the intersection of Sixth Street and South A Street the night of September 25, 2010 when he was hit. The driver did not stop and fled the scene of the crash. The suspect vehicle is described as a white, Volkswagen Jetta, possibly a 1995 to 1999 model. The hit-and-run car was last seen traveling west on Sixth Street. Anyone with information is asked to contact Madera Police Detective Sergeant Dino Lawson at 559-675-4212.
I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Eladio Lemus for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Hit-and-Run Statistics
According to the California Highway Patrol's traffic accident statistics, there were 17,158 hit-and-run car accidents that resulted in fatalities or injuries in California in 2008. A majority of these car accidents involved injuries. There were a total of 247 deaths in 2008 involving hit-and-runs statewide.
Holding Wrongdoers Accountable
Leaving the scene of a car accident is not only a violation of California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a), but it is also inhumane, inconsiderate and immoral. The driver in this case basically struck an elderly man and left him to die on the roadway. Such lack of respect for another human life is simply appalling! I hope the hit-and-run driver in this case is apprehended and brought to justice. Protecting Victims' Rights
In this particular case, it also appears that the driver may have committed right-of-way violations because Lemus was crossing the street at the intersection. The law however requires motorists to remain at the scene of an accident regardless of who was at fault. Families of deceased victims in such cases would benefit from a consultation with an experienced Fresno personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and make sure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also advise families about how their auto insurance policy might apply to a hit-and-run or to an incident where the at-fault motorist is uninsured or underinsured.
