Sam • 17 November 2009 • Car Accident, Personal Injury

An Orange County car accident that happened the afternoon of November 10, 2009 has seriously injured a man after his vehicle crashed with another at a street intersection in Tustin, California. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, officials say the accident was the result of one of the drivers making an unsafe left turn in front of the other driver. The accident occurred at the intersection of Newport Avenue and Macy Drive when a Chevy Equinox made a left turn in front of a Corvette, pushing the sports car into a light pole. The Corvette was almost split in two by the fallen concrete light pole. The driver of the Corvette was injured and transported to an area hospital. It is now known whether the driver of the Equinox suffered any injuries. An investigation is ongoing.

It is unfortunate that the driver of the Corvette sustained possibly serious injuries because of the other driver's negligence. I hope he makes a quick and complete recovery. This injured victim and his family will be in my prayers.

Car Accidents in Orange County

Two fatalities and 392 injuries were reported in the city of Tustin as a result of car accidents in 2007, according to California Highway Patrol's traffic accident statistics. In Orange County as a whole, car accidents claimed 178 lives and injured 14,185 people in 2007.

Based on this newspaper report, it appears that the driver of the Chevy Equinox made an unsafe left turn and caused this accident. In such cases, car accident victims could seek compensation to cover medical expenses, lost wages and other related damages.

California Law Relating to Left Turns

California law is very specific about the requirements for drivers making a left turn or a U-turn. California Vehicle Code section 21801 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety."

It would be in the best interest of this victim to contact an experienced Orange County personal injury attorney who will make sure that the negligent parties are identified and held responsible for their actions.
