More Umbrella Strollers Recalled for Fingertip Amputation Hazards
Regal Lager Inc. has issued a defective product recall for about 1,200 Cybex strollers because the stroller's hinge mechanism poses a fingertip amputation and serious injury hazard to young children. According to a news report in Consumeraffairs.com, the firm has received one report so far of a child putting his finger in the stroller's hinge mechanism, which resulted in a finger fracture. Officials warn that the injuries are likely to occur when you open or unfold the stroller.
Strollers Made in China
This product defect recall involves Onyx and Topaz models of Cybex umbrella strollers that were manufactured in China. They were sold at department stores and children's products stores across the country between August and November 2009 for between $140 and $260. Those who own these defective strollers are asked to stop using them right away and contact Regal Lager to receive a free hinge cover.
Product Liability Issues
This is the third in a series of identical stroller recalls involving defective hinges that have caused serious personal injuries to young children. Graco, earlier this month, recalled 1.5 million strollers after the company received several reports of children's finger tips getting cut off by stroller hinges. Graco received seven reports of children placing their fingers in the stroller's canopy hinge as it was being opened or closed. Of those cases, five children had their finger tips severed while two children sustained cuts on their finger tips.
In November, UK-based Maclaren recalled about 1 million strollers for an identical problem involving reports of fingertip amputations as a result of a defective hinge mechanism. Federal officials are now investigating the issue further by examining all strollers with similar designs.
These are serious product defects that could result in permanent injuries or disfigurement. It is about time that all children's product manufacturers took a closer look at their products and voluntarily fixed these problems and not wait until more children get injured.
