Officials have identified an LAPD motorcycle officer who was critically injured in a serious car accident in Los Angeles on the 5 Freeway November 7, 2009 as Timothy Kay. The Bakersfield California reports that Kay was riding north on the freeway, close to the Tejon Summit, when he crashed into the left rear of a 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck. According to California Highway Patrol officials, Kay was thrown off his motorcycle. He sustained a broken right arm, lacerations to his forehead and a serious cut on the back of his head. Officials identified the driver of the pickup as Joel Lopez. Kay's condition has now stabilized.

It is indeed a relief that Kay did not sustain life-threatening injuries in this car accident. I hope and pray that he makes a speedy and full recovery. Please keep Kay and his family in your prayers.

Los Angeles Motorcycle Accident Statistics

In the city of Los Angeles, 32 deaths and 1,158 injuries were reported as a result of motorcycle accidents, according to CHP's traffic accident statistics. Countywide, 85 deaths and 2,792 injuries were reported involving motorcycle accidents during the same year.

There are more questions than answers as far as this motorcycle accident is concerned. Did the driver of pickup, Lopez, cut off the motorcycle officer? Did he drive into the path of the motorcycle causing the officer to rear-end the truck? Did the pickup truck change lanes in an unsafe manner or slow down suddenly on the freeway causing the collision?

Liability Issues in Car Accidents

If Lopez is found at fault for this accident, he could be held liable for Kay's serious injuries. In such cases, victims may seek compensation to cover medical costs, loss of wages and other accident-related expenses. In this case, if Kay was on-the-job, he may also be entitled to worker's compensation benefits to cover some of those expenses.

An experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer can help victims and their families secure fair compensation for their injuries, damages and loss. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also take a comprehensive look at the case, identify the negligent parties and hold them responsible.
