Car accident lawyers in CaliforniaTwo pedestrians were injured in a Los Angeles car accident, which officials say, was caused by a teen who left the scene of the crash. According to a City News Service report, the injury pedestrian accident occurred near the intersection of 59th Place and Broadway the night of June 2, 2011. The teen was apparently getting a driving lesson with her father in the front passenger seat and another teenage woman in the backseat. The teen driver crashed through a gate and into a parking lot, striking two pedestrians and destroying a taco stand.

The two teens fled on foot, while the dad drove the car away from the scene. The girls were pursued by others and brought back to the scene of the crash. The father was also followed by another driver and brought back to the scene. The two pedestrians were hospitalized with serious injuries. The teen driver is facing felony hit-and-run charges. An investigation is ongoing.

My heart goes out to the pedestrians who were apparently seriously injured in this hit-and-run car accident. I wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 104 fatalities and 2,716 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in the city of Los Angeles. Countywide, pedestrian accidents claimed 214 lives and injured 4,985 people during the same year.

Leaving the Scene of a Crash

If the details of this news report are accurate, the teen was learning to drive with her father in front seat. It is inexcusable for the teens to have left the scene, but it is even more appalling that the girl's father panicked and drove away from the scene. I commend the witnesses who chased after the two teens and the dad and returned them back to the scene, where they should have been in the first place!

Leaving the scene of an injury crash is not only a cowardly and irresponsible act, but it is also illegal. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident."
