The two victims who were seriously injured in a Los Angeles car accident were identified as Angel Kazanjian, 78, and her daughter Amral Yakoubian, 36. The Pasadena Star News reports that the two women were walking across the street in a marked crosswalk the night of November 23, 2009 when a 69-year-old driver stuck them. Kazanjian sustained critical injuries and Yakoubian was said to be in serious condition. The driver who hit them was not injured.
My heart goes out to these two victims who were apparently walking to a hospital across the street. This must be a tragic blow for the family. I wish both the victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep them in your prayers.
Los Angeles Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Five people died and 89 were injured as a result of pedestrian accidents in Pasadena, according to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). In Los Angeles County as a whole, 210 deaths and 5,095 injuries were reported in 2007, due to pedestrian accidents. Also, countywide, car accidents caused 712 deaths and 56,475 injuries in 2007.
If the details of this news report are accurate, it seems to me that the driver of the vehicle should have stopped and let these women cross the road. California law requires drivers to yield right-of-way to pedestrians who are crossing the street in a marked crosswalk or at an intersection. California Vehicle Code Section 21950 states: "The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection." The driver is also required to reduce the speed of a vehicle as he or she approaches a crosswalk or intersection in order to allow the pedestrians to cross the street safely.
An Experienced Personal Injury Lawyer Can Help
The family of these two seriously injured victims would benefit by seeking the counsel of an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer who will make sure that the accident is fairly investigated and that the negligent parties are held accountable for their actions. If a dangerous roadway played a part in this accident, a knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to file a claim on behalf of the victims against the governmental agency responsible for maintaining that roadway. In California, such claims are required to be filed within six months of an accident or injury.
