A police officer sustained injuries in a dog bite incident in the San Francisco area when he was in the process of responding to reports of two loose dogs wandering in neighborhood. Bay City News reports that the incident occurred the morning of January 19, 2010 near a street intersection in Hercules. Apparently, the officer saw a male and female cross-breed dogs playing on the street. He waited in his car for animal control officers to get there.

Unrestrained Dogs Attack Officer

But, when the officer got out of the car right before the animal control officers arrived on scene, the male dog lunged at him and attacked him. The other dog was not involved. The officer shot the attacking dog twice, fatally wounding the animal. The female dog was taken away by animal control officials. The officer was taken to an area hospital with bites and cuts to his left hand, right arm and right knee. He is said to be recovering.

My heart goes out to this officer who was injured just trying to do his job. I'm relieved to hear that his injuries were not major. I hope he has a smooth recovery. It's also fortunate that no one else was attacked by these dogs.

Dog Owner Could be Held Liable

Officials are apparently looking for the dog owner who allowed his or her dogs to roam around the neighborhood. Hercules has strict leash laws and according to the report, loose dogs have become a problem in this city. Council members have even recommended doubling penalties for dog owners who have their dogs at large.

Aside from city ordinances, California has a strict liability statute, which basically holds dog owners responsible for the actions of their pet. In California, if your dog bites someone, you could be held liable for injuries, no matter what. The only exceptions are when the victim has attacked you or your dog or if your dog bit a person who was burglarizing or trespassing on your property.
