Walter Barrett, 53, sustained fatal injuries in a San Francisco car accident, which officials say, involved a hit-and-run driver. According to an Associated Press news report, the fatal hit-and-run car accident occurred on Highway 280 in Daly City the morning of April 10, 2011.
California Highway Patrol officials say Barrett was walking along the shoulder of the highway and apparently tried to walk across the roadway when he was struck by a gray 2009 Toyota Corolla. Barrett crashed through the windshield of the Toyota and died from his injuries. The driver of the Toyota fled the scene of the car accident. Anyone who has witnessed this collision or has information about the hit-and-run driver is asked to contact CHP officials at 415-557-1094.
I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Walter Barrett for their tremendous loss. Please keep this grieving family in your thoughts and prayers.
Pedestrian Accident Statistics
According to CHP's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were two fatalities and 39 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in Daly City. In San Mateo County as a whole, 36 people died and 2,673 injuries were reported as a result of pedestrian accidents during the same year.
Leaving the Scene of a Car Accident
In this particular case, it appears that the driver of the Toyota struck the pedestrian and fled the scene, leaving him lying on the roadway without care and medical attention. Hit-and-run involving an injury and/or death is a felony crime under California law. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident."
Not only is it illegal to leave the scene of a car accident, but it is also a heartless and cruel act, which shows a callous disregard for a fellow human being.
