Summer Most Dangerous Month for Car Accidents
A recent study by the University of Minnesota has found that summer, not winter, is the most dangerous time when it comes to car accidents. According to a CBS News report, the university did a national poll asking people when they thought the most dangerous time to drive was. A majority, about 83 percent, answered "winter." That's a logical answer. But experts who performed the study say, according to crash data, the most dangerous time of year to drive is summer. In fact, the upcoming July 4 holiday is when a majority of traffic accident fatalities occur nationwide.
Why is Summer More Dangerous
It may surprise many that there are more accident deaths and serious personal injuries on July 4 and during the summer than New Year's and Christmas. This is because people are programmed to drive more carefully during the winter months when they know there are risks associated with icy roads and poor visibility. There is almost a false sense of security during the summer months when everything is nice and bright.
The study also found that rural areas are more at-risk for accidents than large metropolitan areas. That is because people are less likely to be buckled up and more likely to be driving under the influence or driving higher than the posted speed limit.
This study is an important reminder for all of us to drive safely during the summer. We often see a number of DUI collisions in the summer due to an increased number of parties and summer get-togethers. Also, remember, that we have three holidays during the summer – Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day. The increase in the number of traffic accidents begins around Memorial Day and continues through Labor Day.
Safe Travel Tips
There are several steps you can take to make summer travel safe. First of all, do not drink and drive. Make sure your car and your tires are properly maintained. Avoid distracted driving at all costs. Put your cell phone away when you drive and make sure everything from your CD player, temperature control settings and GPS are set and working before you start driving. Summer is also when we see a lot of fatigued driving. This can be extremely dangerous as well. Always take adequate rest and get enough sleep before you set off. At all times, wear your seatbelt. It is a proven fact that seatbelts save lives. Have a wonderful summer and a fun Fourth of July!
