Four teenagers were injured in a San Luis Obispo car accident that involved a suspected drunk driver. According to a news report, the injury accident occurred at San Luis Drive and California Boulevard in San Luis Obispo the night of June 14, 2011. Authorities report that the 16-year-old male driver of a 1995 Honda Accord may have been under the influence when he veered off the roadway. His vehicle overturned into a creek bed. A 16-year-old male, 17-year-old male and a 17-year-old female were injured as was the driver. An investigation is ongoing.
My thoughts and prayers are with the young victims of this San Luis Obispo car accident. I wish them all a complete and speedy recovery.
DUI Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 36 people were injured in alcohol-related crashes in San Luis Obispo. During that same year, DUI collisions in San Luis Obispo County claimed 11 lives and injured 199 people.
California Drunk Driving Laws
The authorities report that the teenage driver involved in this crash may have been under the influence of alcohol. Drivers 21 years of age and older may not drive a car with a blood-alcohol concentration of .08 percent or higher under California Vehicle Code Section 23152. Drivers under the age of 21 face sterner restrictions regarding alcohol. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23136: "It is unlawful for a person under the age of 21 years who has a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.01 percent or greater, as measured by a preliminary alcohol screening test or other chemical test, to drive a vehicle."
Liability Issues
In such cases, injured victims would be well-advised to contact a reputed California personal injury lawyer, who has a successful track record of financially pursuing drunk drivers. A skilled car accident lawyer will also be able to advise victims about how their own car insurance policy might apply to an incident where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
