February 17, 2012--San Francisco, CA--On Tuesday, a paratransit shuttle bus owned by BayMed Express ran over a pedestrian, pinning him under the bus and causing severe injuries. However, the driver was not charged, prompting outraged responses from several groups.
According to witnesses, the shuttle turned right at the intersection of Leavenworth Street and Eddy Street in San Francisco. An unidentified man with a cane was attempting to cross the street at that intersection. Witnesses stated that the man clearly had the right of way, a theory supported by police who investigated the scene. However, the bus driver was not charged with a crime.
The man was pinned under the bus's wheels for several minutes until he could be extracted by rescue workers and taken to a hospital. Authorities confirmed that the man had several broken bones but there is no further word on his condition at the present time. More

A 47-year-old woman was critically injured in a San Francisco car accident, which officials say involved a hit-and-run driver. According to a Bay City News report, the injury collision occurred the evening of February 13, 2012 at the intersection of Mission and 13th streets. The woman was walking south on Mission before attempting to cross 13th Street. She was in the crosswalk on a green light when a white truck hit her. The driver who hit the woman as he was making a right turn onto eastbound 13th Street accelerated and drove away from the scene. He was later identified as 55-year-old Craig Sheppard and arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The victim was transported to a local hospital with life threatening head injuries.

The driver of the Muni bus that ran over and killed Emily Dunn in a horrific pedestrian accident at a Castro intersection will face criminal charges. According to a news report in The Bay Citizen, the fatal accident occurred August 11, 2011 at the intersection of Hartford and 18th streets. Police said the 23-year-old Dunn had almost finished crossing Hartford Street when a Muni bus turning from 18th Street hit and crushed her under its wheels. The driver, Wallace Loggins, has been charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. He could face up to one year in county jail if convicted.

Thomas Foakes, 30, of Petaluma, suffered major injuries in a San Francisco area car accident after a car hit him while he was crossing the street. According to an ABC news report, the injury collision occurred the evening of January 20, 2012 at the intersection of South McDowell Boulevard and McNeil Avenue near the Washington Square Shopping Center in Petaluma. Police say a Buick sedan driven by 17-year-old Todd Schwenn, struck Foakes who was walking west in a crosswalk.
Schwenn's car struck the pedestrian who then hit the hood and the windshield before going over the top of the car and landing on the roadway about 75 feet north of the crosswalk. Foakes has been hospitalized in serious but stable condition. Officials say Schwenn received his driver's license just two weeks prior to this crash. They do not believe alcohol was a factor in this incident.

A 10-year-old boy was injured in a San Francisco area car accident after he was struck by a vehicle. According to a news report in The San Ramon Patch, the injury collision occurred the morning of January 18, 2012 at the intersection of Milo Way and Davona Drive in San Ramon. Officials say the 17-year-old driver of a Jeep Wrangler travelling on Davona attempted a left turn onto Milo Way. The Jeep then hit the 10-year-old who was traveling south on Davona on a bicycle. The boy sustained non-life-threatening injuries. An investigation is ongoing.
I'm relieved to note that the boy did not suffer major injuries in this crash. I wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. He will be in my prayers.

A 55-year-old San Jose man was killed in a San Francisco area car accident when the vehicle in which he was traveling went out of control and crashed, the night of January 7, 2012. According to a report in The San Jose Mercury News, the fatal DUI collision occurred along the northbound Interstate 680 in Fremont. Officials say a Dodge Caravan driven by Salvador Espino, 55, was traveling up to 90 miles per hour when it veered through traffic, through the center median, went off the roadway and crashed into two trees. The right side of the minivan was sheared off and the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Espino faces several charges including DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

The vehicle clipped the front of her Honda sending it spinning into a telephone pole and down a roadside ravine. Simmons suffered a leg injury and burns to her face. Her passenger sustained a broken back and both of them still suffer from whiplash-related back problems. Simmons is offering the reward to anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the hit-and-run driver in this case.

Hugo Garcia-Espinoza, 22, Guillermo Montanez, 58, and two passengers were injured in a San Francisco car accident when their vehicles collided head-on. Officials say Garcia-Espinoza drove his Honda Civic into oncoming traffic in an attempt to pass a car and struck a Honda Accord driven by Montanez. Garcia-Espinoza suffered a possible broken femur in the crash. Montanez and his two passengers, a 51-year-old woman and a 6-year-old girl, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. It is unclear if Garcia-Espinoza will be cited for the collision.
