Dr. Kevin Mack, 52, was killed in a San Francisco bus accident involving a University of California at San Francisco shuttle bus and a big rig. According to a news report in the San Francisco Chronicle, the fatal truck versus bus accident occurred at the intersection of Octavia Boulevard and Oak Street in San Francisco, the morning of July 14, 2011. The authorities report that the driver of the shuttle bus may have run a red light before colliding with the big rig. Mack was ejected from the shuttle and fatally injured. Two women and a man who were passengers on the shuttle bus were injured. The driver of the shuttle bus sustained minor injuries in the crash as well. Officials say the shuttle bus did not have seatbelts.
My heart goes out to the family and friends of Dr. Kevin Mack following this tragic truck accident. My thoughts and prayers are also with the injured victims of this fatal crash. I wish them all the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
San Francisco Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 35 people were killed and 3,577 were injured in San Francisco car accidents.
Possible Red Light Violation
It appears from the report that the driver of the shuttle bus may have run a red light and caused the collision with the big rig. California Vehicle Code Section 21453 (a) states: "A driver facing a circular red signal shall stop at the limit line before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown."
Fault and Liability
If it is determined that the driver of the shuttle bus was at fault for this accident, then he and his employer, the bus company and possibly the university, could be held liable for the resulting injuries, damages and losses. Injured victims can seek compensation from the at-fault parties for medical expenses, lost wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages.
The family of a deceased victim can file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for medical and funeral expenses, lost future income, loss of companionship, and other damages. An experienced San Francisco personal injury lawyer will better advise car accident victims and their families about their legal rights and options.
